Evtl Problem mit SSL, siehe:
SMTP SECURE Problem ab PHP 5.6 mit ungültigen Zertifikaten

Dafür sollte es dann im Backend einen zusätzlichen Schalter geben
Ebenso einen Schalter für den SMTP Debug Modus

Ronald schlägt hier noch vor:
1.) Möglichkeit im Admin schaffen die Debugging Funktion des PHPMailers zu aktivieren
2.) Problem beheben: PHPMailer hat wohl Probleme, wenn das SSL-Zertifikat des E-Mail Servers auf eine andere Domain ausgestellt ist als die eingetragene, siehe dazu: Sicherheitspatch für alle Shopversionen (security_fix_2017_01_05.zip)

Das Problem mit SSL scheint dann aufzutreten, wenn der SMTP-Server mit einer anderen Adresse antwortet als die, welche angegeben wurde.
